View Full Version : Victorian Blitz on Lane Splitting

Lane filtering, and riding down between stationary cars to the traffic lights is being targeted by motorcycle police. This costs $180 and 2 points.

Sharing bicycle lanes has always been frowned upon and is also being scrutinised, as are random licence and rego checks.

Melbourne city and the freeways seem to be heavily targeted.

Thanks fur the heads up Bueller...thats ONE of the many reasons we ride...get to the front...take off...out of the way...save traffic congestion

Not happy about this topic... a lot of riders around town having been telling me that they've been caught out.

When the cops stop doing it, so will I.

Go and do an advanced riding course and you'll never do it again ..... on our course we watched red light camera videos ..... 1 in 5 cars run the lights, if you take off when the light goes green you run a very big risk of getting splattered.
The course I just did has totally changed my riding style and driving style particularly away from traffic lights.

Don't think lane filtering (between stationary cars) is even illegal in QLD yet, I know they were trying to bring in a new law, but not sure it is in yet.
lane splitting between moving cars is illegal as they get you for overtaking on the left $150 2 points.

I only know this as it was explained in detail as he was writting me out a ticket. I was filtering up to the lights and at the last minute they started to move and I pushed my luck to get in front and was caught by a bike cop, I don't know where they spring from sometimes

After the comments Doug made, I may have to reconsider my driving habits

Yes it was the course thru M&W's ..... one of the best I have been on, concentrates massively on cornering, braking, peripheral vision and staying alive .... two of the guys that run the course are either police or ex police and know what they are on about. The theory part really opens your eyes, as I said above it has even changed my driving style in a car, when I'm at the front at lights I now ALWAYS let the cars next to me get half way across before I move, and I tell you I have seen some real close calls !

Cars running red lights is a real problem in Melbourne. I have been riding into the city daily for years and have seen plenty of close (and past close) red light incidents so I never go for the racing start off the lights.

These cops should get off their collective arses and sort out some of the dangerous driving that is par for the course now before they go wanking on about filtering and lane splitting.
Maybe the speed camera revenue is down so they need to find another easy money target?

As Penny said the bastards lane split themselves - one law for the f@#$ing wallopers and one for the rest of us I suppose. :Veryangry:

They have been sitting at the top of Toorak rd on ramp inbound for the last few weeks on and off. They see the bikes lane spitting. Then shoot down on ramp, lane split themselves & pull the riders over.

How much was the course Doug. I was looking at it for me and Lauren when I bought Rage. Glad it is worth it. I did my original QRide thru them. Has anyone done the "Stay Upright" course. it was canned for a while after a mate of mine died on mt cotton course. But i think it is open again. Did you get any discount for doing it after getting your bike?

As for the filtering... Interesting ab out the moving vs stationery scenario. On the left is always iffy, I crawl in first if doing that. Got to bikr parks on Monday and a girl I work with (rides a fuggin scooter) tells me her housemate is in shock. She was stationary on sunday in her car. Bike down her left clipped her car, he flipped and hit a pole. Dead... Another one. She pretty much said she is gonna never drive again. All I could think was "how quick was he going to have that happen by clipping a car?"
Always checkin before takin off at lights! But apparently QLD cops are targetting this as well... so be careful.
CHAOS OUT!

Bloke went past me between cars coming out of adelaide today with cars diverging into one lane due to roadworks, not clever.

Next they will be out nicking me for shooting down the hard shoulder on the way into the city when all the traffic backs up at that first set of lights where the highway hits the Gympie road. :Tounge:

Actually I had a car try and clean me up the other day, I was doing exactly that, cruising past the traffic in the hard shoulder and there was a car that obviously got pissed off watching all the bikes go past and decided he was going to do it in his car, only he didn't look first, pulled out quick and nearly collected me in the process....lucky for me I was only going slow and managed to avoid him, he noticed me at the last minute when it was too late for him to do anything about it, mind you he did lower the window to say sorry.
At the end of the day, we were both in the wrong, me for being there and him for pulling into the hard sholder.

When riding the bike I treat all cars like they are out to get me

A couple of weeks back I took off from a set of lights (gently) heading across a 6 lane highway with a decent median strip between the 6 lanes...as I approached the 3 lanes on the other side of the strip this young lady came cruising through her red light across my and the cars next to me's path, after hitting the horn (Buells do have good horns...scared the shite outa meself) she looked at us...asleep...no idea :Astonished: that was plenty of time...not just running a red light...totally asleep or drug fu@#ed :out:

As most will know we pay a $50 dollar levy on our bike rego down here in Vic for the government to spend on "motorcycle safety" schemes or maybe that should be scams. Instead of blitzing filtering/lane splitting or what ever else, wouldn't it be more constructive to help subsidise the type of coarse 12XBL is talking about...with the videos/theoretical n practical stuff :?:
One thing that shits me are those cheese cutter barriers there errecting more n more of :nothappy:...n they just don't listen...probably with our fddies too :grrr:

They should concentrate on the fu@#ers running the red lights.

Fucken Revenue Raising, n Continued Oppression to Bikers.

Though Doug has a Valid Point..
but ya Ever Heard of LOOK to the LEFT.. Look to the Right?
I ALWAYS DO said, Even when Cruising through a Light that's Been GREEN fer Ages on Me Approach.

Splitting is Dangerous, Agreed, But ONLY when Bein Done By Temporary Australians.
If the Traffic is Static, n ya Aware Some Fucktard Cager May Open Their Door, fer whatever Reason, It's Safer than Bein Bottled up in City Peak Hour.
As an Ex Melbourne Courier (over a quarter million klicks btw, 10 hours a day in all weather/conditions without an accident) n someone that's Done Shitloads of Inner Sydney Clicks, this's ME Steadfast Opinion.

The Cops SHOULD Target Lane Splitters in MOVING Traffic..
I Aint got a Probby with that..
But Static??

FUCK OFF!

n as Cr@b Mentioned Above.. Take them Fucken Red Light Runners OFF the Road, n Fine em MASSIVELY, FIRST OFFENCE!

When riding the bike I treat all cars like they are out to get me

That was the first piece of advice a motorcycle copper (who lived next door) gave me when I got my first bike.

....three weeks later the bastard gave me my first speeding ticket. :nothappy:

Should have had it framed, reckoned I was doing 63mph,

...........on a BSA Bantam.
