Crankcase Breather Hose overflow under certain running conditions.

Question is about the crankcase breather hose that is situated to the right of the oil tank under the seat (not the one that's connected to the aire intake).

Oil leaks out of there when I'm going on the highway. I've noticed it after I've say 100-150kms on the Hume hwy at about 115km/hr in top gear, which is just under 3,000rpm.

I ends up leaking some very nice looking oil on the right rear of the bike which is not only messy but it's too close to the rear tyre and is therefore a worry for me.

Any ideas as to why the circumstances I've described above lead to the increase in pressure(?) and therefore oil leakage.

Bike has a forcewinder air intake and aftermarket muffler.

Does any one make a catch can type arrangement for the Buell X1 Ligtning crankcase breather hose or know of anyone whose made one for their bike?

It hasn't happened when I'm going for a play ride around the twisities or riding around town - eg gear changes multiply speed and throttle openings etc.

Thanks

This is the breather from the gear box? , I have mine routed up under the tail
of the bike , you can get a little air filter jobbie ( I got one with my forcewinder) I've never lost oil from that one, the engine breather drips a bit
after a flogging , but not much.
Over filling the engine oil will induce excess oil loss.

thanks for the quick reply.

Yes it's the hose routed up in the tail section of the bike on the RHS.

I'm sure the oil is not over filled.

Only seems to happen after highway cruising.

 Don't get me started on f*^%&^ng catch cans:grin:

I;m no mechanic and i have an XB, but my best guess............

When you ride yr bike sedately, around town, short runs, espesh in winter, it warms the oil. After you switch it off, the oil cools and contracts, drawing in a certain amount of air + moisture as condensation inside the crankcase or gearbox. When you finally get out on the highway, the bike gets heaps hotter, and blows all this extra moisture, (which incidentally expands 1600times when it turns to steam) out of the breather(s). Plus a bit of oil. If your breathers are short it will look like pus, the longer they are will give the oil a cleaner look.

I have my breathers routed to just inside the left foot-peg, and the amount of oil coming out is negligible, just looks a lot on the concrete.

Some people at BM09 may have noticed the crap on my rear wheel - was after 300k "spirited" riding, and the oil levels never moved.
