Ok, I have one for you that most of you might think is strange.....here goes.
It was a few years ago now, but I used to keep a lot of very dangerous reptiles as pets....Rattlesnakes, Cobras, Taipans, Vipers etc.
In fact here is a pic of my favorite an 11.5 foot King Cobra and yes I am holding him in just a hook and my hand.
It's OK though as he only has enough venom to drop about 20 men

Well, that is about the best one I have of the king.
But here is another giving you a better idea of the size.
Then there is the Black Mamba, now this thing used to make me jump occasionally.
A little baby spitting Cobra....not that they are any less dangerous when young.
Oh and a rather large Western Diamondback Rattlesnake that I managed to squeeze into a lolly tin to transport
All the other photos I have are the old style (on paper) and I don't have a scanner set up at the moment.
The worst ones I kept as far as temperament were the Coastal Taipans, those bastards are just plain mean.

Don't have any now, the wife kept freaking out with the kids being around and me playing with dangerous animals.
Bloody women :?
Now I am playing the waiting game, when the kids are ready to leave the nest then maybe I will get the chance again.
Geeze Pikey your a bloody legend mate ,love the cobra, beautiful animal.
Did you milk em for venom?
what about inland Taipans, have any of them?
Pikey
14-05-2008, 08:39 PM
Used to milk a few of them for venom to supply the toxin units to make anti venom, but the trouble is it stresses them out and some of them can stop feeding, so you have to be careful and you can only get away with it with some of the more out going species.
Inland Taipans (fierce snake), I wish.... there are not many of those about....I have worked with one or two, but never managed to own one myself.
They are very easy going snakes considering they are the number 1 most deadly snake in the world. You can actually handle them without to many problems. Strange as every time I have gone near the Coastal Taipans they just want to kill me.

That is a Indian (specticaled) Cobra and they have sewn it's mouth up to stop it biting the baby.
Not good, there are some sick people about.
They do a lot of that over there, most of the snake charmers sew up the mouths of the snakes.
Here is a good video of a snake if you want to see a King in action.

Had to jump around a few times like that myself when I used to get the King out, until they settle down a little they make you jump around. Once they settle down you can pick them up as I have in the first photo.

I'm with you, from the old school, a good snake is a dead snake, glad someone else said it before I did. I have killed a heap over the years from 6' king browns to red belly blacks, they make my skin crawl.

hey watchit with tha women jokes ;) (j/k)
the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake is beautiful! I'm looking to get a snake myself, as i'm not a cat/dog person and love the easy maintence of a snake... however I was only looking at getting slightly smaller snake...any recommendations?
Pikey

To be honest Penny I deal with the big and nasty dangerous ones, not really into the non-venomous stuff.
If I was going to recommend something, I guess you would be looking for a childrens python or something like that as they stay quite small.
The carpet and diamond pythons are not bad snakes to keep, however they can get quite large (6-7ft) they are still quite slender, so they are easy to work with.
There are a lot better snakes out there, but some of them can get a little expensive.
You need to handle them and take them straight from their tank as that is when they are going to be at their worst as you are going into their territory, if they are steady and don't show any signs of aggression then you will be OK. The more they are handled the tamer they will be.
You also need to see them feed or have a guarantee that they are feeding.
Take a good look around to see what is on offer, before you make your choice is about the best advice I can give you.

Some of the Rhino vipers are impressive colours, kept quite a few of these myself and the Gaboon vipers, same family and they are both plain mean fuckers.
The Gaboon has the largest fangs of all the venomous snakes and one of the fastest strikes of all the snakes, the fastest would be it's close brother the puff adder (same family)
A strike and bite from one takes approx .25 of a second.
Of all the snakes I have kept these were the ones that I dreaded ever being tagged by....massive delivery of venom and haemotoxic, so you would be looking at massive hemorrhaging and breaking down of muscle and flesh.
Very nasty.....I will see if I can find a pic of the effect of a large viper bite.
Found one, this is the the sort of thing a big bite from a viper does.....see last pic....careful as it is pretty graphic.
Most Aussie snakes carry a neurotoxic venom, so it is slightly better as it attacks the nervous system, so not as painful, still as deadly if not more so.

I was in Cambodia last month... on my last day in Siem Reap I went to see the floating village...
While I was visiting one of the floating shops I heard this hissing sound, and standing behind me was this little girl with a snake wrapped around her...
Even though I knew it had to be a tame snake I sufficiently crapped myself... She kept on holding it out to me and asking for $1us to have a photo with the snake, I just kept on backing away lol
Anyway I managed to convince her that I would still give her the $1us if she didn't come any closer :hehe:
